The Sudbury Cyclists Union was formed in 2010 and became Bike Sudbury/Vélo Sudbury in 2019. We've grown from a small group of very committed individuals who organized critical mass rides and advocated at the city-level for better and safer cycling, to an organization that works closely with numerous community partners to make cycling fun and safe in all areas of Greater Sudbury.
In 2018, we held 20 community rides and 3 special rides at New Sudbury Days, Valley East Days, and the Mayor's Ride in June - Sudbury Bike Month. We did bike valet parking at 3 community festivals, 4 bike workshops, and 2 socials. With our community partners the City of Greater Sudbury, Public Health Sudbury & Districts, and Rainbow Routes, over 40 children received refurbished bikes as part of the Kids Bike Exchange program.
Since 2010, we've been advocating for safe cycling in all of Greater Sudbury. That means safer road cycling infrastructure, and better trails that all connect together into a network that allows people to bike to their destinations. It took a lot of work, but with a very progressive Council and some great City staff including a new Active Transportation Coordinator hired in 2016, our community began seeing some major inroads into building a minimum grid of cycling infrastructure. The City implemented Complete Streets, Transportation Demand Management, a Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan, and a Road Safety Assessment process. The City is currently working on Complete Streets Guidelines, online cycling maps, a bike parking program, and more infrastructure projects.
Moving forward, our priorities will be to keep working on the need for a minimum grid of safe on-road cycling infrastructure, a Trails Master Plan that will ensure the safety of people who bike on our trails, and more fun programming that will encourage more people to bike in our city.
In 2018, our community received a Share the Road Coalition Bronze Bike Friendly Community award, the 42th community in Ontario to receive this award. In the new City of Greater Sudbury's Corporate Strategic Plan 2019-2027, the City will work on achieving a Silver level designation of this award.
And in 2019, Bike Sudbury received a Public Hero Award from Public Health Sudbury & Districts, for the impact that we've had on our community!
Watch for more great things in 2020!
