Support for Provincial Policy Statement
As supporters of the Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury’s 4 top environmental priorities (Priorities), we have been asked to support and join other northern groups in asking that the Provincial Policy Statement be protective of natural heritage in northern communities.
The Provincial Policy Statement guides land use in the province, and has a big impact on our environment, whether through transportation policies, support for sustainable neighbourhood design, and through the policies responsible for protecting our natural environment and water quality.
It is currently under review, and the province is collecting public input. The draft proposed so far has some positive changes such as increased support for healthy communities, active transportation, and a requirement to consider climate change.
However, many of the policies that protect our natural heritage, wetlands, and water quality, only apply in southern Ontario. We’ve been asked to join other northern voices telling the province that Northern Ontario also values a healthy natural environment.
Please take a moment to review the proposed letter by the CLS. Please let us know by this coming Thursday (March 28), if anyone has any concerns in supporting the letter.
